Background
• The City of Palmdale has announced that the Palmdale Youth Library’s programs and services may be scaled back or terminated under the City’s 2009-2010 budget. (Bob Wilson, “Council OKs, two plans to cut costs,” Antelope Valley Press, Feb. 26, 2009)
• The City will have two community meetings in April to hear resident and employee comments on which municipal programs should or should not receive cuts.
Youth Library Statistics and History
• The Palmdale Youth Library opened its doors in 1998.
• It’s a 10,000 square-foot, $2.9 million facility dedicated to youth from toddlers through age 15.
• The library provides an inviting and safe space for children and youth to explore and learn. When the library opened in 1998, a little boy put it perfectly: “The old library is brown and yuck. But this new library is bright and fun.”
• An average of 400 youth participate in Youth Library programs each month (story time and book clubs).
• The Library serves 42,434 youth ages 0-15 (30% of Palmdale’s population).
* The Youth Library has 60,469 volumes compared to 78,167 volumes in the main branch.
